Students conducting a science experiment.

Students in Joan Cortes’ Biomedical Science class at the Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy (NDA) recently stepped into the role of forensic scientists to investigate a suspicious death.

During this hands-on lab, students explored the role of toxicology in forensic investigations. They used chemicals and scientific tests to find out whether poison or other substances may have contributed to a person’s death. Like real forensic scientists, students carefully examined evidence, and used their results to put together clues and help solve the case.

The activity brought classroom lessons to life while strengthening students’ understanding of key concepts in the Biomedical Science curriculum. Students practiced the scientific method, collected and analyzed evidence, applied laboratory techniques, and drew conclusions based on their findings.

Beyond solving a fictional mystery, the experience gave students a glimpse into careers in forensic science, toxicology, and the medical field.

Through engaging, real-world learning opportunities like this, students at NDA are developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific skills that will prepare them for future success.
