If you find yourself in downtown Black Mountain, you may notice brightly colored sidewalks created by local artists including some of BCS students.
Students in Ms. Diane Birken’s art class at Charles D. Owen High School participated in the Chalk the Walk art competition. Several from the community joined in to design a three foot by three foot square in the Town Square. Artists had the opportunity to create their own design, which did not disappoint.
“This is a positive event for students to engage in and brighten up their community with an array of colors,” Ms. Birken said. “Many townsfolk came out to the event, and were delighted to see the artwork from their local high schoolers.”
Twenty of Owen’s advanced art students participated in the contest. Ms. Birken says she is proud of the work her students put into showcasing their talents, with one student winning the teen competition.
“I am so proud of all my students that were a part of the event,” she said. “We have a lot of talented students at Owen. Our very own Bay Allebach won first place in the teen portion of the competition. I cannot wait to see what the students come up with next year.”
