At Charles D. Owen High School (OHS), the Apparel class is more than just a chance for students to learn how to sew - it’s an opportunity for them to develop a unique set of skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
In this class students dive into the world of fashion and textiles, learning everything from basic stitching techniques to advanced design and garment construction. But beyond the fabric and thread, they’re gaining problem-solving abilities, creativity, and an understanding of the intricate relationship between design and function.
“In my class students not only learn to sew, but we also explore career pathways in the apparel industry,” said Family and Consumer Science teacher Brittney Whitworth. “This class is different from most at OHS, because it is hands-on and allows students to express their creativity.”
Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes like apparel are essential, because they provide students with skills that are directly applicable to real-world careers. In a world where the job market is constantly evolving, having hands-on experience in a specialized field gives students a competitive edge.
“I love teaching apparel because I believe that sewing is a valuable life skill,” said Mrs. Whitworth. “I love watching students fall in love with sewing, just like I did when I was their age.”
Whether students choose to pursue a career in fashion or apply their skills to other industries, the knowledge and experience gained from CTE classes are invaluable stepping stones toward success.
