Owen High CTE coordinator Weston McKinney brought the energy of the community to ignite the interest of students. The students were able to meet local business owners and managers, learn what is required to get a job in the field and be informed about future earning potential.
Every adult working with children at Owen high cares about these children and this opportunity helps students envision their future lives as adults in our community. Daxon Mason a senior found that the opportunities in HVAC are good, “They pay you to train and learn. “ Hayden , a junior learned that the GI Bill can help with training in electrical careers and if he retires from the service he would get a huge pay bump when he joined the civilian work force as an electrician. Addy Hartman a freshman working at Lighter Mount Horsemanship and says that working with animals and people is very rewarding, but “you got to put the work in.” That is a true statement for any career and the hard work put into this career fair is evident by how much enjoyment it is bringing.
Taylor McKee, Ella Penland and Crystal Garcia learned that as a real estate agent, you have to be really flexible and have good money management. Phoebe Hall with Carolina Life Properties is grateful that kids are interested in real estate and that they know they have to be willing to jump into the work at any time and be good with money management. She wants kids to know that a lot of people make it look easy but there is a lot of hard work behind the scenes.
Stephanie McKinney a speech therapist with CarePartners Pace wants kids to know that there are many opportunities and you can never get bored. CTE courses at Owen High are designed to prepare children with skills that will bring them satisfying careers both monetarily and personally.
Registration for classes will take place in March and we hope that students will pursue the opportunities available through CTE. Owen’s Curriculum Open House is Feb 28th from 5:30-7:00 pm, parents of students and the students are encouraged to attend to learn about all of the opportunities at Owen High.
