Buncombe County Schools (BCS) offers a rigorous arts program from the elementary level all the way to high school. Our dedicated art teachers help cultivate student creativity.
Charles D. Owen High School (OHS) boasts a thriving art department where students are challenged daily to showcase their artistic talents. Art teacher Diane Burkin said she always looks for new mediums for her students to try, and even brings in local artists to help foster the creative spark.
“Ona Armstrong is a fabulous local artist who is excellent at teaching pottery especially on the wheel,” Ms. Burkin said. “It’s an amazing opportunity for my students to learn from her on this difficult skill. She also helps the kids explore career options in the art industry.”
Some of the students in Ms. Burkin’s art class have had her class all four years. They love the opportunity to be at the wheel.
“My students are always mesmerized by pottery,” she explained. “It’s a soothing and satisfying art medium. I love having the opportunities to fire up the pottery wheel, and let their imagination flow.”
Ona Armstrong’s work is on display at Firefly Valley Pottery in West Asheville.
