Sparks were flying and the molten metal was glowing as BCS students fused focus and skill at a welding competition. Last month’s event, hosted by Dave Steel, Inc., included teams from across the region, including A.C. Reynolds and Enka high schools. 

A student raises her welding mask and smiles“We are truly grateful to have an amazing industry partner like Dave Steel to give students real-world experience and the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and network with industry professionals,” said BCS Career and Technical Education Director Michele Smith. “A highlight for students was touring the Dave Steel facility and getting a valuable look into the world of professional steel fabrication.”

Reynolds High pose with their trophyIn addition to demonstrating safety procedures and welding acumen, students completed a 50-question exam on overall welding knowledge. The Reynolds team of Roman Douthit, Reid Davidson, Dallas Pruitt, and Levi Ager placed second overall. The Enka team of Elaina Deweese, Ross Franklin, Braxton Santana, Connor Warren and Noah Childers achieved a third place finish. Childers and Reynolds student Brady Clausen also earned scholarships at the competition.

I look forward to the opportunities it will provide our students for years to come.”
