On Saturday March 2nd, the NDA Science Olympiad team competed at regionals on the campus of UNCA. Science Olympiad is a multi-event science competition where students compete in teams in 23 different events. Events range from standard tests, such as Astronomy and Herpetology; to hands on labs, such as Thermodynamics and Forensics; to engineering events, such as Boomilever and Mousetrap Vehicle. Students started preparing in the fall, and all their hard work paid off! The team won medals in the following varsity events:
1st Place: Herpetology, Mission Possible, Dynamic Planet
2nd Place: Sounds of Music
3rd Place: Fossils, Boomilever, Disease Detectives
4th Place: Protein Modeling, Thermodynamics, Write It-Do It
5th Place: Geologic Mapping, Fermi Questions
The team placed 6th out of 15 varsity teams, which is impressive for their first year of truly competing. Most importantly, the students learned a lot, had some awesome experiences, and made great connections with students from other schools. They are already gearing up for next year's competition!
