Martin L. Nesbitt, Jr. Discovery Academy (NDA) students are building houses and leadership skills at the same time.

Students are participating in a Habitat Student Build in collaboration with Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity and five local schools. Members of the Nesbitt Habitat Collaborative (a school club), along with civil engineering and architecture students, raised more than $10,000 to build a brand-new home for a local family. NDA students will work on this house build and other Habitat construction projects through January.

“This is such a great opportunity for us to make a positive impact,” said NDA junior and club founder Rachel White. “It’s really fulfilling. You get to help a family fulfill their dream, and you get to meet other people, learn about teamwork, and get construction and engineering skills. It’s just a big learning experience.”

Other participating schools include Asheville School, Christ School, Asheville Christian Academy (ACA), Carolina Day School, and The Franklin School of Innovation

Sponsors include Buncombe County Schools CTE, State Farm, Walmart, and Bank of America.
